John Jacobs & Bayer CropScience

John Jacobs and Bayer CropScience (BSC) were awarded an IWGSC Outstanding Leadership Award in recognition and appreciation of their leadership for advancing significantly the IWGSC efforts to complete the reference sequence of the bread wheat genome. John received his award in January 2016 at the Plant and Animal Genome Conference (PAG) in San Diego, United States.

John Jacobs and BCS have demonstrated repeatedly their commitment to the IWGSC effort to complete the reference sequence of the wheat genome. Not only have they worked with us to ensure that the tools and resources developed by the IWGSC will be useful for breeding programs, they also financially sponsored the physical mapping of several chromosomes so that we could complete the maps ahead of schedule. By supporting IWGSC research projects directly, we are now in a position to accelerate the completion of the overall project.

John Jacobs is Expert Scientist in the Trait Research – Genomics group of Bayer Crop Science. He has been with Bayer and predecessor companies since 1997 after a Post Doc at the University of Gent (Belgium) with Prof. Van Montagu and a PhD from Radboud University Nijmegen in The Netherlands.

John contributed to genome platform and trait programs for cotton, rice and oilseeds. He is currently focusing on genome platform and crop efficiency programs in wheat.
